British Airways Boeing 777-236ER G-YMMO arrived into Johannesburg this morning as BA33 from London Heathrow (depart London 30th May), however the return BA34 has been delayed overnight. It is not clear whether this is due to a crew or technical issue.

British Airways B777-200ER G-VIIS Returns from Cardiff Maintenance.

British Airways Boeing 777-236ER G-VIIS, which has been under maintenance at Cardiff-Wales since 2nd May, positioned Cardiff-Wales – London Heathrow this afternoon as BA9172 and immediately entered service as BA239 London Heathrow – Boston. The aircraft has been fitted with New First, upgraded Economy and Premium Economy cabins and THALES AVOD. This completes both the Boeing 777-200/200ER refurbishment programme and the New First programme. Fourteen Boeing 747-400s remain with Old First.

AAIB Confirm Maintenance Error Caused G-EUOE Accident.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch released a special bulletin today rating the emergency return of British Airways A319 G-EUOE to London Heathrow on 24th May whilst operating BA762 London Heathrow – Oslo as an accident.

The AAIB have confirmed that the fan cowl doors on both engines were not latched following overnight maintenance on 23rd/24th May. As a result both fan cowl doors detached from the aircraft. On detaching the left hand door caused damage to the inboard leading edge slats, fuselage skin near the wing root, overwing fairing, belly fairing, inboard flaps, the leading edge and horizontal skin of the stabiliser and the main gear door. The right hand door caused damage to slats three and four, and a puncture to the flap fairing. A fuel line on the right engine was puntured leading to a fire in that engine.

Once the fault was rectified the decision was made to position back to London Gatwick as BA9256 as cabin crew were about to go out of hours. No hotels could be found for passengers who were forced to sleep in the terminal.

British Airways A319 G-EUOE BA762 Heathrow Emergency Return.

British Airways A319 G-EUOE operating BA762 London Heathrow – Oslo had the cowling doors on the left engine blow open on take off, crew stopped the climb at 6,000 ft, declared emergency and were positioning for a return to Heathrow when there was a bang and the right engine cowling doors also blew off. The aircraft returned for a safe landing on the north runway. Passengers were evacuated via emergency chutes to the left of the aircraft on the runway causing minor injuries to three people. Both runways were closed immediately after the incident with the south runway re-opening shortly afterwards.

British Airways today indicated that a weekly A320 London Heathrow – Las Palmas service will operate for the duration of the Winter 2013 timetable. The service will operate on Saturdays to the following schedule:

British Airways Boeing 777-236ER G-CIIV, which has been under maintenance at Cardiff-Wales since 3rd April, positioned Cardiff-Wales – London Heathrow this afternoon as BA9174. The aircraft is confirmed as being fitted with New First, refurbished Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins and THALES IFE. This means that G-VIIS is now the only B777-200ER in traffic which has not undergone the refurbishment.
